Welcome to a New World of Hope!

Violence is a Quiet Tragedy that Affects us All.
SOTHAWACA's Violence elimination Program ~ Hope of Healing Initiative is a novel concept stemming from many years of experience and research. It is a comprehensive approach to supporting women and children especially girls who suffer from violence in the home. The Hope of Healing Initiative is a new beginning, for SOTHAWACA and for women.
Since her earliest days in the field, SOTHAWACA has listened to women speak of the violence they experience, the impasse they face when trying to access help and, in particular, the sense that they are trapped with no alternatives and no support. While 1 in 3 women throughout the world is a victim of domestic abuse, studies have indicated an astounding 98% of low income women in the rural communities suffer from physical and/or sexual violence.
From the just concluded research between SOTHAWACA and the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, we can make bold to say that there has been no awareness of the extent, nature and impact of domestic violence.
Violence stems from women's subordinate position in society, especially in a culture as traditional and patriarchal as Nigeria. While awareness of violence is slowly emerging, there are still very few services supporting women and addressing public attitudes and policies. SOTHAWACA has decided to shift her campaign to the grass roots since there are no services offering a comprehensive package of counselling and life skills development; it is in the context of this vacuum that we are launching a Violence elimination Program. The Hope of Healing Initiative is a ground-breaking initiative to assist and empower women, children especially girls, and the greater community.
Whatever statistics we have as figures of violence against women may only represent the tip of the iceberg. A variety of factors such as social pressure, economic pressure, family pressure, lack of education, lack of appropriate services and ultimately lack of feasible alternatives dissuade women from leaving a violent situation or finding help.
An Innovative Approach to Assistance and Empowerment
The Hope of Healing Initiative is going to be the first comprehensive women's outfit situated in Okpokhumi-Emai, the Emai Land and Afenmai Land. The program strongly reflects SOTHAWACA's philosophy that women's empowerment, their ability to question their existing reality, to challenge prevailing structures, and to choose amongst alternatives, can take place by helping women help themselves. SOTHAWACA's project breaks new ground for women's movement and is a one-of-a-kind project in Owan East Local Government Area. After more than a decade and a half of successful expansion in a range of programs, services to women and geographic coverage, SOTHAWACA feels she has the capacity, experience and support to pursue one of her initial areas of concern namely challenging the controversial issue of violence against women.
The Hope of Healing Initiative would provide a safe space for women and children especially the girl child who have nowhere to go. SOTHAWACA is currently working on a having a large enough space to that would serve as a skill acquisition centre where no more than 20 women and young girls are trained in different skills. We believe that this environment would encourage mutual support and help the women build a community of their own.
SOTHAWACA will provide a range of services to women and young girls in a safe environment where they can begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, regain their self-confidence, and develop their independence in decision making. In addition to providing this facility, the Hope of Healing Initiative will offer the following services:
• Psycho social counselling
• Legal aid
• Empowerment seminars
• Skills training and financial literacy
• Transportation
• Transitional planning
• Access to micro credit loans
• Literacy programs
• Health programs
• Play therapy for traumatised children
Violence elimination program Goals
